Anxiety: Normal or Disorder?

IS ANXIETY INTERFERING WITH LIFE?

How do you know when anxiety needs attention? Anxiety is a normal response to stress: starting a new job, moving to a new place, or taking a test.  Everyone experiences a little fear or apprehension when faced with the unknown.  But ordinary anxiety comes and goes, and doesn’t interfere with your everyday life.

So what do you do when your anxiety is extreme, and is interfering with your life?  If anxiety is keeping you from things that you enjoy, and fear is keeping you from living your life, you may have an anxiety disorder.  If left untreated, anxiety will usually get worse, cause other health issues.

HOW IS IT TREATED?

Treatment usually falls into two categories: Psychotherapy and medication.  Medication usually isn’t necessary, and most doctors will recommend meeting with a therapist or psychologist to give you tools and techniques for coping with and overcoming anxiety.

Anxiety can affect anyone, regardless of race, age, or gender.  And while there is no exact known cause of anxiety, it can be caused by a number of factors, including: genetics, environmental factors, brain chemistry, stress, childhood abuse, diet, exercise, and sleep habits.
